Predicting Bad Driving By Carmen Daecher

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has offered data showing the importance of closely checking driving record history to maintain a safe driver workforce. Two studies were conducted by state licensing agencies and showed links between poor compliance with the law and the crash history. In West Virginia the study revealed that "high risk" driver behavior was closely associated with crash involvement. Those with one or more traffic violations who had also driven their vehicles while their license was "suspended" had an accident rate double that of the average driver.

In a Massachusetts study, the data was even more revealing: The 1% of drivers who drove with a suspended license accounted for 5% of crashes, and; drivers convicted of "serious" offenses were involved in 40% more "at fault" crashes than other drivers.
